Bottega d’Arte by Daniela Lai

The “queen” of Daniela Lai’s production is the “Zaffera,” an ancient technique from the 15th century that was later discontinued and which she has fully revived. This noble production, characterized by raised blue designs, was practiced in only five cities in Central Italy and was embraced in a more cultured environment compared to the earlier archaic majolica, over which the Zaffera prevailed in its mature and late stages. Zaffera is characterized by ornamental motifs that include geometric floral elements—such as the oak leaf, a sacred tree symbolizing moral and spiritual strength—as well as animals like dogs, fish, birds, and anthropomorphic figures, representing a fantastical, magical world inspired by medieval culture. Daniela Lai also enjoys working with peperino stone, carving and inlaying it with thick crystals, glazing, and painting it—a technique she has developed over recent years. She organizes courses and demonstrations in her workshop to engage tourists and anyone interested in her craft. Recently, she hosted three interns specializing in ceramics and product design.
